Hemp, sometimes known as industrial hemp, is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant species produced primarily for the industrial applications of its byproducts.

It was one of the first plants 10,000 years ago to be spun into usable fabric.

It may be developed into paper, textiles, clothes, biodegradable plastics, oils, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed, among other commercial things.

Although both cannabis as narcotic and industrial hemp is derived from the Cannabis sativa species and include the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are separate strains with diverse phytochemical compositions and applications.

Hemp is typically sown in the northern hemisphere between March and May, and in the southern hemisphere between September and November. It takes three to four months to mature. It develops really quickly.

Selective breeding through millennia has resulted in variations with a broad range of features, such as being adapted for specific environments/latitudes, generating varying ratios and compositions of terpenoids and cannabinoids (CBD, THC, CBG, CBC, CBN…etc.), fiber quality, oil/seed production, and so on. Hemp produced for fiber is densely planted, producing tall, thin plants with long fibers.

In contrast to medicinal cannabis, types produced for fiber and seed have less than 0.3% THC and are inappropriate for the production of hashish and marijuana.

Although they may be identified genetically, the main distinctions between the two types of plants are their look and the quantity of 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) released in a sticky mixture by epidermal hairs called glandular trichomes.

Cannabis oilseed and fiber cultivars allowed for industrial hemp cultivation generate just trace levels of this psychoactive chemical, insufficient to cause any physical or psychological effects. Hemp typically has less than 0.3% THC, but Cannabis cultivars produced for medical or recreational purposes might have anywhere from 2% to 20% THC.
